phase shifting
two or more performers begin repeating a pattern in unison and one of the performers begins increasing temo
beat-class sets
beats that are attacked in a pattern: same basic idea as pitch class set (Richard Cohn)
phase-shifting progression
one of the voices accelerates and actually effects the phase shifting
prolongation region
a new displaced relationship between the patterns is locked inane we hear a canon at a certain number of beats
the tintinnabuli style
latin for “a small bell.” played in the style of tinkling bells
M-Voice
melodic voice which normally consists of stepwise motion within the diatonic scale proper to the triad for a specific piece
T-Voice
the tintinnabuli voice which sounds the members of the tonic triad (the T-voice keeps moving out of the way of the M-voice so they don’t sound in unison)
