Acute Gout Flashcards
What are the crystals made of in Gout?
Monosodium Urate Monohydrate (MSU) Crystals
What are the crystals made of in pseudogout?
Calcium Pyrophosphate (CPP) Crystals
What lab finding is Gout strongly correlated with?
HyperUricemia
Factors that promote Hyperuricemia
Dehydration Alcohol Diuretics Beta Blockers Pyrazinamide (TB) Lead Fructose Meat Consumption
Does Hyperuricemia cause gout?
No it only predisposes gout precipitation
Key History Items in Acute Gout
Abrupt/ Rapid Onset
Monoarticular
Red, Hot Joints that are tender.
MSU crystals on aspiration and bifrengence
They are strongly negative in bifrengence. That means they are yellow when parallel to the orienting line and blue when perpendicular. they are also needle shaped crystals.
CPP Crystals and Pseudogout
Rhomboid shape and positively bifrengent
