Headshot Posing For Jaw Line Flashcards

Q

What to say to fix double chin or accentuate jaw when shooting head on only

A

“Forehead out and down”

This can be over done. For example if the client is leaning back when they do it. Make sure they are up straight. Up straight can also be overdone.

My thought. Straight spine leaning forward just a bit with “forehead out and down” could be done pretty subtly with great results.

Q

How to demonstrate accentuating the jaw for head on shots only.
(this will help them get it)

A

Turn perpendicular to them and pose with “forehead out and down”

Perpendicular “forehead out and down” looks super nerdy. Makes people look like they need a chiropractor. Showing clients can help assure them they are doing it right when they feel awkward or uncomfortable doing it later.

Q

Which shoulder to drop with any headshots

A

Only ever drop the front shoulder for headshots.

If you drop the back shoulder for a head shot when you level the head or say “forehead out and down” you really create a double chin which results in a bad undefined jaw line

Q

What to say to fix double chin or accentuate jaw when shooting at angle instead of head on.

A

“Bring your ears to toward the camera”

My thought: this is a lot like telling them to lean toward the camera while watching to be sure the keep their spine straight.

Q

What are we really doing to the jaw line in headshots that improves it.

A

We are tightening the skin over the jaw line. This gives your light something to really wrap around and define.

My thoughts: even someone with a great jawline and no chin issues can get an amazing look by using headshot techniques to accentuate the jaw line.

In essence if you fix the jaw line you have fixed the chin. The same way if you fix the chin you have fixed the jaw and accentuated it.
