IN CAMERA HISTOGRAM QUESTION. Which type of image capture will display an accurate histogram?

RAW or JPEG?

A

Short answer is JPEG.

This is because regardless of whether you shoot in RAW or JPEG a JPEG image is created and displays on the camera back and is used to create the in camera histogram. This in camera JPEG is baked in with whatever profile you have selected for processing your image in camera. So if you use a punchy high contrast profile for in camera processing those adjustments always display on the in camera histogram. So if you shoot RAW to ensure you retain as much detail as possible it may look like you have lost some detail on the in camera histogram. Example: you might be shooting RAW and your in camera histogram shows you are clipping just a little of the highlights, but when you import the RAW file to a computer the RAW histogram shows no clipping because the RAW doesn’t bake in the profile settings from the in camera JPEG and if it is pulling the profile in at import you can change/remove it because you shot RAW and recover the detail you thought was lost.
