What is covert participant observation
Where the researcher does not tell the group they are being studied, where the researcher gets involved in the group
Example of covert participation observation
Laud Humphreys Tearoom Trade
Studied sexual behaviour in men’s public toilets surrounding gay sex
Goes to their houses to take interviews after obtaining there details
Strengths of covert observation
Eliminated hawthorne effect
Increased validity
Creates rapport
It’s the only way to research some groups
Limitations of covert observation
No consent
Has to avoid getting caught, could be put into a dangerous situation
Going native
Deception
What is overt participation observation
Where the group know they are being studied, researcher is honest and ohh the group

Venkatesh Gang Leader for a Day, spent 6 years studying crack dealing gangs
