What is a lab experiment
Where researchers create a controllable environment to test hypotheses
What is a field experiment
An experiment carried out in a natural social setting which aims to control as many variables as possible
Example of a field experiment
Rosethen Being Sane in Insane Places
studied in a psychiatric hospital where normal people admitted themselves after hearing voices, all participants but one was labelled with schizophrenia, difficult to tell who actually is mentally ill
Example of a lab experiment
Asch, studied conformity
Pps were all asked to judge the length of a line, 7 were confederates answering wrong on purpose
Results, Pps answered questions incorrectly to conform to group answers
Strengths of lab experiments
Controlled conditions allow accurate results
High in replicability
Limitations of lab ex
Setting is unnatural, low in ecological validity
Deception is likely, unethical
Hawethrone effect is likely
Strengths of field ex
Setting in natural, high in ecological val
Behaviour likely to be typical and natural, no hawthorne effect
Unlikely to guess the aim of the experiment, no demand characteristics
Limitations of field ex
Unethical, informed consent in unlikely
Real life settings need to give permission
Uncontrollable extraneous variables
