Anterior/Ventral
Toward, or closer to, the front surface of the body
Posterior/Dorsal
Towards, or closer to, the back of the body
Superior
Towards, or closer to, the top of the head
Inferior
Towards, or closer to, the soles of the feet
Crainal (head and trunk only)
Towards, or closer to, the top of the head
Caudal (head and trunk only)
Toward, or closer to, the inferior most part of the trunk
Medial
Closer to the midline of the body
Lateral
Farther from the midline of the body
Proximal (limbs only)
toward, or closer to, the attachment of an extremity to the trunk
Distal (limbs only)
Away, or farther from the attachment of an extremity to the trunk
Deep/internal
Away from the surface of the body. Towards the inside
Superficial/external
Close to the surface of the body. Towards the outside
Sagittal plane
Vertical plane that divides the body into right and left portions
Transverse plan
Horizontal plane. Divides the body into superior and inferior portions
Frontal (coronal) plane
Vertical plane that divides the body into posterior and anterior portions
