6/16/25 Spinal Nerves & Skin Flashcards
(46 cards)
What makes up the CNS?
Brain, brainstem, spinal cord
What makes up the PNS?
All nervous system structures outside the CNS (cranial and spinal nerves)
What does it mean that the CNS and PNS are symmetrical?
Nerves are the same on the left and right sides of the body
What does it mean that the CNS and PNS are segmentally arranged?
The nerves are aligned in lateral segments throughout the body
How many segments makes up the trunk and limbs?
31 segments of tissues
How many segments does the spinal cord have?
31 segments
True or False: each spinal cord segment has paired spinal nerves that innervate each trunk/limb segment.
True
What is the cell of the nervous system called?
Neuron
What kind of neuron is a multipolar neuron?
Motor
Where do multipolar neurons carry information?
From the CNS to the target (axon terminals).
Efferent information
What kind of neuron is a pseudounipolar neuron?
Sensory
Where do pseudounipolar neurons carry information?
From the axon terminals at the target back to the CNS
Afferent information
What are axons of multiple neurons traveling together to and from the target?
Nerves
True or False: Most nerves contain both motor and sensory axons/fibers
True
What are the 3 axons/fiber types of the spinal nerves?
Somatomotor
Sympathetic
Somatosensory
Somatomotor innervation
From CNS to skeletal muscle
Somatomotor neuron type
multipolar
Sympathetic (visceral) innervation
From CNS to smooth muscle and sweat glands
Sympathetic (visceral) neuron type
Multipolar
Somatosensory innervation
From skin to CNS
Pain, touch, temperature
Somatosensory neuron type
Pseudounipolar
What are the 2 fiber/axon types of cutaneous nerves?
Somatosensory and sympathetic (visceral)
What is a dermatone?
A strip of skin supplied by one spinal nerve pair. Note that adjacent segments have overlapping innervation
T4 dermatome
Nipple
