Self Perception: Definition
how we think and feel about ourselves
- our attributes
- our abilities
Self Perception: Relationship to Exercise
- changes how we view our attributes and abilities
- but also changes our actual abilities
Self-Concept
- how a person sees or defines him/herself
- what you call yourself
- descriptive
- identity
Self-Esteem:
- how a person feels about him/herself
- influences and is influenced by all aspects of life
- evaluation of worth, value

Self Perception Profile
we tend to view exercise as a way to demonstrate or improve competence in the different domains
- but we can also think of it as a domain in itself
- people can place importance on exercise and perceive competence in exercise outside of athletic competence
Exercise Identity Measure examples
- I consider myself an exerciser
- I need to exercise to feel good about myself
- for me, being an exerciser means more than just exercising
Possible Selves as Self Concept
- possible selves represent future-oriented self-concept
- two types of possible selves
1. who you want to be (approach, motives, sometimes called ‘hoped for’)
2. who you don’t want to be (avoidance motives, sometimes called ‘feared’ - research shows that exercise behavior is improved when we create scenarios about who we do or don’t want to be
Self-Perceptions Influence Exercise
- higher self-esteem can lead to better adherence to exerecise
- —exercise also improves self-esteem
- physical self-concept is believed to influence exercise behaviors
- body image is a component of physical self-concept
- exercise has the potential to change vale of the body from appearance to function
- — strength, mobility, flexibility, etc
