6.2 - Reflection in soundwaves Flashcards
This includes : what are reflections, echos, soundwaves. (5 cards)
What is reflection?
Reflection is when heat, light, or sound comes back from a surface
What properties of materials and materials do echos best reflect on?
Smooth, flat and large surfaces such as glass, flat metal, and tiles.
Give me 3 things on how echos can be useful
Echos are used to find the depth of the water in oceans. People on a boat would send a sound to the bottom of the ocean. It then reflects and comes back to the surface. People on the boat would take how much time it took to come back so they would know how deep the water is. Bats use echolocation to find food in caves. Doctors also use echos to find images in the patients body, for example: doctors use echoes to find the an unborn baby in the womb.
If people don’t want echoes, what do they do to make a room echo proof.
They would put spiky sponges on the wall so echoes don’t reflect and make a noise. This works because echos reflect best on smooth flat and large surfaces.
What is an echo?
An echo is an reflection of a soundwave.
