What are the rites of passage?

A
  1. Adhan- (and shahadah) recited in babys ear upon birth. Baby is given something sweet
  2. Aqiqah: Baby’s scalp is shaved and weighed and its equivalent is given in gold or silver to charity. Celebration dinner is held for family and friends to welcome child into the world
  3. Khitan: Removing foreskin of baby boy for health reasons
  4. Death: Prayers are recited for a person upon death. Body is washed and then shrouded in white. A funeral prayer is offered at the mosque or cemetery, and when the body is buried, it must face makkah.

  • Classes for parents: classes for parents on enhancing their understanding about Islam and studying the meaning of the Qu’ran. Opportunities given to parents to discuss issues and challenged in raising children.
  • Groups for children: Develops children’s knowledge of beliefs and practices. Can hold competitions, speeches, and teem quizzes. This makes coming to mosque both an educational and enjoyable experience for families and brings the community closer

How can counselling support families?

A

Counselling plays a key role in maintaining peace within homes and in the community. Family support services, counselling clinics, and shari’ah councils help resolve issues in personal relationships or between families.
- Some communities arrange premarital counselling sessions to offer advice on the rights and responsibilities of marriage and to give couples a chance to discuss compatibility. These can avoid things such as divorce
