EQ2 - 4.5 Flashcards
Why is the sea level rising?
Sea level are rising due to thermal expansion - the increase in heat increases the energy in water particles, making them take up much more space.
How bad will sea level get and how will it affect different places around the world?
The Antarctic ice sheet holds approximately 90% of freshwater in our planet, if melted due to rising temperatures, it could raise sea levels by 61.1 metres.
Should sea levels rise, a total of 100000 properties in the southeast of England will be at risk.
How will climate change affect storms?
Storm surges will increase power if combined with sea level rise and if already worsened (hotter atmosphere).
How do groynes work?
Groynes prevent longshore drift from moving sediment along the coast. It builds up beaches and absorbs wave energy.
How do sea walls work?
Sea walls focus on reflecting wave energy back out to the sea raer than undercutting the cliff.
