Osmosis Flashcards

1
Q

Osmosis

A

It is the movement of water from a dilute to a more concentrated solute solution through a partially permeable membrane that allows water to pass through. Transport of water from high to low concentration, down a concentration gradient.

Diffusion

A

Diffusion takes place when particles can move from a higher concentration to a lower concentration.

Concentration

A

Sugar dissolved in water is an example of a solution. Sugar is the solute and water is the solvent.

Q

Concentation 1

A

Concentration is a measurement of how much solute is dissolved in a given volume of solvent. If a solution contains a lot of dissolved solute, we say it is concentrated. If it contains little solute, it is dilute.

Q

Rates of diffusion

A

Factors that increase the rate of diffusion include:

1. Concentration gradient: The bigger the difference in concentration, the faster diffusion will be.

Q

Rates of diffusion 3

A
  1. The distance the molecules must diffuse: If the molecules have to travel a shorter distance, diffusion will be faster.

Q

Isotonic

A

If the concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is the same as the internal concentration, the solution is istonic to the cell. Isotonic=2 solutions, same concentration.

Q

Hypertonic

A

If the concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is higher than the internal concentration, the solution is hypertonic to the cell. Hypertonic=2 solutions, the stronger one is hypertonic.

Q

Plasmolysis

A

If more water is lost by osmosis, the vacuole and cytoplasm shrink, and eventually the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall, this is called plasmolysis. Water loss from plant cell, the vacuole shrinks, and membrane pulls away from cell wall.
