Respiration Flashcards

1
Q

What is respiration?

A

An enzyme controlled process (it occurs all the time)
Exothermic reaction (releasing energy)
Glucose + Oxygen ➡️ Carbon Dioxide + Water (+ Energy)
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ➡️ 6CO2 + 6H2O

Q

Where does respiration take place?

A

Most of these reactions take place in the mitochondria
Mitochondria are tiny rod-shaped parts (organelles); (large surface area) that are found in almost all plant and animal cells as well as in fungal and algal cells (eukaryotes)

Q

What is anaerobic respiration?

A

Anaerobic respiration is a chemical reaction that releases energy from glucose without using oxygen.
Glucose ➡️ lactic acid

Q

When does anaerobic respiration happen?

A

It happens when oxygen cannot be delivered to the muscles fast enough (e.g. hard exercise).

Q

How is anaerobic respiration in yeast different to animals?

A

Anaerobic respiration is different in yeast by them forming ethanol and carbon dioxide. It is known as fermentation. (Both yeast and animals use glucose).
