Crosses the blood brain barrier and is converted into dopamine

Dose dependent - nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea , hypertension , anxiety , aggression, paranoia.

Sinemet (levodopa + carbidopa)

CLASSIFICATION =
Antiparkinsons

USE =
Parkinsons disease

MODE OF ACTION :
Carbidopa (an enzyme inhibitor) slows down peripheral metabolism to allow more levodopa to cross the blood brain barrier and convert to dopamine.

ADVERSE =
Dose dependent - nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea , hypertension , anxiety , aggression, paranoia.

Tolcapone

CLASSIFICATION =
Antiparkinsons

USE =
Parkinsons disease

MODE OF ACTION :
Inhibits the COMT synaptic enzyme which metabolises neurotransmitters. Used with combination therapy (As does not cross the blood brain barrier).

ADVERSE =
Dose dependent - nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea , hypertension , anxiety , aggression, paranoia.

Benzotopine

Blocks cholinergic receptors to stop acetylcholine (neurotransmitter) from binding

ADVERSE =
Dry mouth , blurred vision , constipation
