Glucocorticoids and the Stress Response Flashcards

1
Q

How has cortisol been linked to depression?

A

50% of depressed patients have elevated cortisol
Dexamethasone suppression test abnormal in depressed patients

Q

What is the dexamethasone suppression test?

A

People usually have high cortisol in the morning

If given dexamethasone bolus, HPA negative feedback turns off cortisol production, so no cortisol surge in morning

Describe the 2 proposed mechanisms that glucocorticoids affect gene transcription

Q

Give 3 immunosupressive actions of glucocorticoids

A
