Neuropathology 1 Flashcards
What is the most common type of brain tumour?
Secondary metastatic tumour from another primary tumour
e.g. breast, melanoma, lung, kidney, gut, lymphoma
What are the effects of a brain tumour?
Nil
Space occupying lesion
Haemorrhage
What are the main primary brain tumours?
Meningioma
Glioma
Schwannoma (acoustic neuroma)
What causes meningioma?
Sporadic
Post-irradiation
Neurofibrosis 2
What are the features of meningioma?
Not invasive, but erosive and compressive
At sites of arachnoid mater
Slow growing
Surgically removed
What are the clinical manifestations of meningioma?
Fits
Drowsiness
Headaches
What are the features of glioma?
Any type of glial cell
Low-high spectrum of malignancy
Destroy brain tissue and grow into space
Difficult to remove
Who gets medulloblastomas and PNETs?
Children
Name 2 peripheral nerve tumours
Schwannoma
Neurofibroma
What type of inheritance is neurofibromatosis 1?
Autosomal dominant
50% spontaneous
What is MISME?
Multiple inherited schwannomas, meningiomas, ependymomas
What is neurofibromatosis?
Genetic condition that causes tumours to develop in nerve cells
How would an acoustic neuroma present?
Hearing loss
Which gene mutation is associated with MISME?
NF2
