Fats Flashcards
sources of triglycerides?
animal fats
plant fats
soy beans
lengths of chains?
short chain = <8 carbons
medium chain = 8-12 carbons
long chain = 14+ carbons
what do chylomicrons do?
enter the blood via lymph vessels and transport lipids
main carrier of dietary triglycerides
how are lipids transported?
as lipoproteins with apolipoproteins
APO A, B, C, D, E
what do VLDLs, HDLs and LDLs do?
VLDLs transport triglycerides from the liver to muscles/tissues
HDL and LDLs transport cholesterol
what occurs in the fasting state?
insulin decrease, lipase increase, oxidation of free fatty acids for energy
what does insulin do regarding fatty acid breakdown?
inhibits the lipase that catalyses triacylglycerol hydrolysis
what is ketogenesis?
rapid fatty acid oxidation, occurs in starving and diabetes mellitus
what does EFA deficiency cause?
growth restriction, kidney lesions or death
what are fat recommendations?
total = 30%
sat fat = 11%
trans fat = 2%
