Q

What must be involved in a redox reaction for it to occur?

A
  • must be both an oxidising and reducing agent present
  • some substances can act both as oxidising and reducing
depends on the type of reaction and conditions of the reaction

Q

What is a reducing agent ?

A
  • a substance that reduces another atom or ion by causing it to gain electrons
  • a reducing agent itself gets oxidised (loses/donates electrons)

Q

What is an oxidising agent?

A
  • a substance that oxidises another atom or ion by causing it to lose electrons
  • it gets reduced itself as it gains electrons
