Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is mass #
sum of neutrons and protons
What is atomic #
of protons & electrons
What is s?
1 orbital = 2 electrons
What is p?
3 orbitals = 6 electrons
What is d?
5 orbitals = 10 electrons
What is f?
7 oribitals = 14 electrons
What is the name for group 1?
Alkali metals
What is the name for group 2?
Alkali Earth
What is the name for group 17?
Halogens
What is the name for group 18?
Nobel gases
How are the orbitals arranged on the periodic table?
s, d, p, f (f is bottom)
How many valence electrons do groups 1-18 have?
G1= 1 ve G2 = 2 ve G3-12 = varies G14 = 4 ve G15 = 5 ve G16 = 6 ve G17 = 7 ve G18= 8 ve
What is the trend for atomic radius? Why?
increasing downward from group, increasing from right to left
reason: increasing downward as energy levels increase
increasing from right to left because there are more electrons meaning more pull on the protons
What is the trend for Ionization Energy? Why?
Increase from bottom to top for group. Increase from left to right.
reason: for increasing bottom to top because electrons are closer to nucleus and electrons are held more tightly so more energy to remove
reason: for left to right because more electrons added so more attraction
