Chapter 3 Flashcards
SO3^2-
sulfite
What is a cat ion?
lose electrons
C2H3O2
acetate
what are the 3 ranges of electronegativity?
non polar covalent: 0-0.5
polar covalent: 0.5-2.1
ionic: >2.1
remember like this: I-onic I-naya is best, non is obvious lowest/worse
prefixes for covalent bonds
1- mono 2- di 3-tri 4-tetra** only one thats diff! 5-penta 6-hexa 7-hepta 8-octo
Shapes for lewis structure: 1 lone pair, 3 electrons
bent or angular
CO3^2-
carbonate
How to name covalent bonds?
non metal + nonmetal
first nonmetal if 2 or more atoms add a prefix
second nonmetal, change ending to ide and add prefix if has more then 2 atoms
ANYTHING MORE THEN 2 NEEDS PREFIX
What 3 groups lose electrons?
G1 -> 1+ (lose 1)
G2 -> 2+ (lose 2)
G3 -> 3+ (lose 3)
same as group #s
what is difference between ionic and covalent/molecular?
ionic gains and loses electrons and covalent shares electrons
What 3 groups gain electrons
G17 -> 1- (gain 1)
G 16 -> 2- (gain 2)
G 15 -> 3- (gain 3)
count backwards on periodic table, ignore 18
Shapes for lewis structure: 1 lone pair, 4 electrons
trigonal pyramid
What is an anion?
gain electrons (aka AN ion)
How do you name ionic compounds
cation + anion
change anion spelling to ide
NO3-
Nitrate
