He wanted the best for Cuba and the poor relationship with the USA(Bay of Pigs)
What was Khrushchev reason for having Cuba as an ally?
His aim was to increase Soviet influence in South America. And it gave him the possibility of installing missiles in Cuba

What was the American reaction?
- Kennedy discussed with his advisor committee ExComm
- He quarantined Cuba with an American blockade, all ships were ordered to fire on any ship that tried to pass

Defense conditions. 1 was nuclear war and 5 was normal level of readiness
What was the Soviet response?
- Khrushchev was convinced Kennedy would invade Cuba
- October 23 Soviet ships carrying missiles approached blockade
What happened on the 24th October?
UN secretary U Thant called for a compromise and Khrushchev ordered his ships to halt. Tensions where high
What happened on the 25th October 1962?
A Soviet Ship entered the quarantined zone. It was stopped then allowed to pass as it was just carrying oil
When did the letter arrive and what did it say?
On the 25th October a letter for Khrushchev promised he would remove missiles of America doesn’t invade
What did the 2nd letter say?
That the missiles would be removed if the US missiles from Turkey were also removed. Kennedy at first rejected but they came to a compromise allowing the missiles to be removed secretly

Soviet submarine, the captain wanted to launch the torpedo but it was overruled
