A

In 1488, Portugal financed a voyage by Bartholomew Dias, who rounded the tip of Africa (which became known as the Cape of Good Hope).

A

By 1494, Portugal and Spain were fighting over land in the newly found Americas. The Treaty of Tordesillas established a line of demarcation on a longitudinal line that runs through the western Atlantic Ocean. Everything to the east of the line belonged to Portugal and everything to the west of the line belonged to Spain (western side turned out to be enormous so Spain became a mega-power quickly),

  • seized Montezuma and began a siege of Tenochtitlan

  • set out in search of the Incas w/200 men in 1531
  • disease, superior weapons, and help from enemies quickly destroyed the Incas’s resistance
  • landed shortly after an Inca civil war
  • in control of the region by 1535

The peninsulares were the select group of Spanish officials sent to govern the colonies.

A

The creoles were people born in the colonies to Spanish parents. They later became the leaders of the independence movements.

A

The viceroys were appointed governors of each of the five regions of New Spain. They established the encomienda system to run the empire.

  • a system of forced labor
  • provided peninsulares w/land and a specified number of native laborers in return for protecting the natives and converting them to Christianity
  • Christian missionaries wanted to treat natives better… so the reformers brought in African slaves to reduce strain on the natives

A

A joint-stock company is an organization created to pool the resources of many merchants, thereby distributing the costs and risks of colonization and reducing the danger for individual investors.

The Dutch East India Company controlled routes to the Spice Islands (modern-day Indonesia).

  • actively sought to trade but tried not to import more than it exported
  • colonized a lot (colonies gave the mother country raw resources which weren’t considered imports while creating new markets for processed exports
  • monarchies promoted domestic industry and placed tariffs on imports from competing empires
