A
  • The uprising that threatened the rule of authoritarian leader Gadhafi in Libya began as a domestic issue

Q

What is the structural explanation for the systemic level of analysis?

A
  • Neorealist view
  • Refers to a state’s position in relation to other states
  • So powerful states behave one way + weaker states another
  • In an anarchical system, states have to act in their own self-interest -> to seek relative gains + maintain balances of power

16
Q

What is the process explanation for the systemic level of analysis?

A

Liberalist view
States cooperate because of expected mutual benefits
- increased information certainty
- lower transaction costs
Relates to a state’s relationship with other states over time

17
Q

What are the advantages of the systemic level of analysis

A
  • Most comprehensive level
  • Allows holistic assessment of international relations (lost at lower levels)
  • Allows us to better predict systemic outcomes
18
Q

Give an example of using the systemic level

A

Systemic level can explain the stability of international politics through the polarity of the system

19
Q

What are the disadvantages of the systemic level of analysis

A

May lead observer to:

  • exaggerate impact of the system on national actors
  • conversely devalue impact that actors can have upon the system

Also assumes characteristics of actors + generalises their behaviours
