What happens in the contemplation stage?
They do not exercise but are thinking about becoming more active in the next 6 months. Education is the best strategy. Help develop motivational programs that will lead to long term adherence.
What happens in the preparation stage?
They do exercise (occasionally) but are planning to begin exercising regularly in the next month. They are believers in the health benefits but may have unrealistic expectations.
What happens in the action phase?
They are active but have not yet maintained the behavior for 6 months. Continue to provide them with education and discuss potential barriers for their exercise plan.
What happens in the maintenance phase?
They have maintained the change for 6 months or more but can be still tempted to revert to old habits of less exercise.
What does SMART goal setting stand for?
Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely
The process created to produce internalized experiences to support or enhance exercise participation.
