17
Q

FATHER

A

Brevity for TACAN

18
Q

FDD

A

Flight Deck Director: responsible for on deck handling of helos

19
Q

Free deck

A

Recovery to a RAST equipped whip using the RSD w/o the use of the haul down cable

20
Q

HCS

A

Helo Control Station: shipboard A/C control tower or comms installation that serves as tower

21
Q

HDC

A

Helicopter Direction Center: Controlling agency in an LPD/LHA/LHD that is responsible for the dispatch and control of A/C in an amphibious force.

22
Q

HERO

A

Hazard of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance

23
Q

Types of Ordnance (in regard to HERO)

A

Safe: sufficiently shielded or protected to prevent adverse affects from shipboard RF environment (provided General HERO observed)

Susceptible: Contains EEDs and CADs that can be adversely affected by RF energy. Safety/reliability in jeopardy.

Unsafe: Internal wiring physically exposed. HERO causes additional electrical connections. Can be dangerous.

24
Q

Mother

A

Ship of origin or ship providing control

25
Q

NVD Compliant

A

Components that are either

NVD compatible
NVD shipboard friendly
noncompatible systems which are dimmed, baffled, or hidden from direct line of sight of the aided operator.

NVD compliant ship can be used for aided and unaided ops.

26
Q

NVD Compatible

A

Lighting systems which are only required for the unaided operator and shall have no adverse effect on the operator equipped with NVDs. System virtually invisible to NVDs.

27
Q

NVD Shipboard Friendly

A

Lighting systems required to be seen by both aided and unaided operators simultaneously or independently.

28
Q

NVD shipboard covert

A

Only required to be seen by aided operator. Cannot be detected unaided.

29
Q

Optimum winds for normal ops.

A

Down the lineup line @ half max speed allowed by applicable wind envelopes.

30
Q

Optimum winds for single engine

A

Relative wind as close as possible to being down the lineup line at max wind speed allowed by wind envelopes.

31
Q

Optimum wind for up the stern approach (MH-60R)

A

10-20 off port bow at 1/2 max speed allowed

32
Q

Optimum winds for AFCS/SAS/BOOST or any flight control failure or degradation.

A

Winds that provide the most stable deck.

33
Q

Parrot

A

Brevity code word for xpdr

34
Q

Pigeons

A

Vectors to specified location

35
Q

POPEYE

A

Aircraft has entered IMC

36
Q

PriFly Control

A

Controlling agency on aviation/amphib/ACS that is responsible for visual control of A/C w/in 5 NM of the ship (tower)

37
Q

Shipboard landing environment

A

That phase of the approach, nominally from the MAP to flight deck landing during which the aircrew transitions from instrument scan to visual scan.

38
Q

Shipboard T/O environment

A

Phase of departure from an ACS nominally from flight deck T/O to a prebriefed level off altitude, of at least 150’ AGL, during which aircrew transitions from Visual scan to inst scan.

For single spot ships, pPAC transitions from visual to inst once positive rate of climb and obstruction clearance assured.

39
Q

Significant wave height

A

Average height (trough to crest) of the 1/3 highest waves valid for the indicated period.

40
Q

VLAs

A

Visual Landing Aids: A combo of markings, lighting, and optical landing systems that provide a/c w/ visual cues for day and aided/unaided night ops. Systems are also used by deck personnel both aided and unaided.
