What is the Chumash?
The printed copy of the Torah
What are Orthodox Jews belief of the Torah?
The literal word of God
—> revealed to them at Mount Sinai
What are Reform Jews belief of the Torah?
A human creation
—> written by their ancestors
Inspired by their understanding of themselves and the place of God in their lives
What are the 2 parts of the Talmud called?
The Mishnah (the core text)
The Gemara (the Rabbinical analysis)
What is the Mishnah written in?
Hebrew
What is the Gemara written in?
Aramaic
What is Kashrut?
The laws relating to food
What is Kosher?
Food that is acceptable to Jews
Means ‘fit’ or ‘correct’
Why can Kosher food laws benefit health?
Not eating animals that are unconscious before they are killed reduces the risk of eating an unhealthy animal
Why do Jews not eat pork?
Pigs in Israel used to carry lots of diseases
What is Treifah?
Food that is not kosher
Means ‘torn’
Originally used for animals that had been attacked by a predator
What food combinations can Jews not have?
Dairy and meat
A 3 hour gap must be observed after meat before eating dairy
What do Jews not eat during Passover?
Anything containing yeast
What animals can Jews eat and not eat?
Every animal whose hoof is divided
—> e.g. ox, sheep, goat, cow
Can’t eat: pigs, camel, hare, hyrax
What are reasons to keep Kashrut?
To follow the mitzvot
—> go to Gan Eden
—> to keep the covenant made with Moses
Covenant at Sinai helped establish Jews unique identity
—> keep following them to establish this

Prayer shawl
When is the tallit worn?
During morning prayers and special occasions
Do Orthodox Jews wear tallits?
Only men wear them

Fringes on the corner
—> reminder of the 10 commandments
