When
Means= “At that time” or “immediately after that time.”
Time expresion
In the future sentence, use the present tense in the time clause.
a) “When” their villages were bombed, the Lost Boys ran.
b) Some Sudanese young men think they will go home “when” their country is at peace.
Whenever
Means= “ Any time” or “every time.”
a) Whenever they think about their country, they are sad.
b) Whenever they tell their story, American are Amazed.
Until
Means= “ up to that time”
a) They walked “until” they reached Ethiopia
b) They received money for a short time “until” they got jobs.
Since or ever since
means= “from that time in the past to the present.
a) Some of them have had no news of their families since they left Sudan.
b) They have been studying English “ ever since they came to the U.S.
Use “For “ with =
the amount of time.
a) They walked for three months.
b) They stayed in a refugee camp for many years.
“During”
Use with=
a) A time such as day , night , or summer , a specific time period ( The time they were in Ethiopia, the month of August, the week of march 2)
b) or an event ( the class, the trip, The meeting)
a) During the day, they walk
b) During their time in the refugee camp, they studied English,
Use “While” or “as” with=
A continues action.
a) “ While” they were taking care of their cattle, their villages were bombed.
b) “As” they were coming to the U.S., they were thinking about their life ahead.
Compare:
a) Use FOR with the amount of time.
b) Use DURING with a named period of time( such as the day, their childhood, the moth of May).
a._ They walked for three months.
a._ Some of they have been in the u.s for over ten years,
b,_ They walked during the day.
b._ They lived in refugee camps during their childhood.
Compare:
a) Use WHEN with simple past action.
b) Use WHILE with a continues action.
a_ They were taking care of their cattle when their villages were bombed
b_ While they were taking care of their cattle, their villages were bombed.
Using the “-ing “ after time words:
If the subject of the time clause and the subject of the main clause are the same, the time clause can be changed to a participial phrase
the time clause can be changed to a participial phrase. The subject is omitted , and the present participle ( -ing form) is used.
Using the “-ing “ after time words:
Time clause can be changed to a participial phrase. (preset participle -ing form.
In sentence (a) , The subject of the main clause and the subject of the time clause are the same.
In Sentence(b) , We delete the subject after the time word( after, While)
a.- The Lost Boys went to Ethiopia after “they” left Sudan.
b._ The Lost Boys went to Ethiopia after “leaving” Sudan.
a_ While “they” were crossing a river, some of the lost Boys drowned.
b.- While “crossing” a river , some of the Lost boys drowned.
