A

A
occurrence of inflammation due to the presence of a microbe

presence of viable microbes in the blood

Patients with 2 or more of the following criteria are defined as having sepsis
A
temperature of more than or equal to 38 degrees or less than 36
HR above 100
RR above 20/min
Leukocyte count more than 16000 or less than 4000
PLUS
a documented infection site

What is the sepsis 6
A
- Take Blood cultures
- Measure accurate hourly Urine output
- Give intravenous Fluid challenges
- Give broad spectrum Antibiotics
- Measure serum Lactate and haemoglobin
- Administer high flow Oxygen.

Diagnosing Infection
A
Blood tests: WCC, CRP, platelets, clotting
- Microbiology: Culture - blood, stool, urine, wound swab, tissue, CSF, sputum
- Viral studies: e.g. NAAT / PCR
- Serology: for antibodies

Treatment
A
- Blood cultures before prescribing
- Review once microbiology results available
- IV antibiotics within 60 minutes of recognition of sepsis
- IV fluids
- Oxygen
- Vasopressors
