Evaluation of Brain Functioning as an Explanation of Aggression Flashcards

1
Q

Why is Swantje et al supporting evidence? (the role of the amygdala in aggressive behaviour)

A

Swantje et al. 2012 found a negative correlation between the volume of the amygdala (measured by MRI scan) and self-reported lifetime aggression in humans (the smaller the size, the more the aggression).

Q

Why is Raine et al supporting evidence? (supporting the role of the amygdala and pre-frontal cortex as explanations of aggression)

A

Raine et al (1997) found differences in levels of functioning when comparing NGRIs to controls using PET scans. NGRIs had less functioning in the corpus callosum, less activity in the amygdala in the left hemisphere and less activity in the prefrontal cortex supporting a link between reduced brain functioning and aggression.

Q

Why is brain functioning to explain aggression useful to psychology in society? (supporting)

A

Donta Page was on trial for murder and Raine testified that Page had misshapen frontal lobes resulting in impulsive and violent behaviour beyond his control. The jury subsequently found Page guilty of a lesser charge of murder, which removed the possibility of the death penalty.
