9.4 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What the two types of Stress?
Can be a strong one-off stimulus, ‘Acute Stress’. Can also be a small burst over a long period, ‘Chronic Stress’.
What are Stress Management, Defensive Strategies?
Are methods used to alleviate stress such as medication, alcohol or can be blaming or denying
What are Stress Management, Coping Strategies?
Involves dealing with the source of stress such as removing the stressor, delegate workload, prioritising task
What are Deadlines and Time Pressures used for?
A method to stimulate/ motivate work. When used correctly will create productivity by stimulating the correct part of the ‘Stress Curve’/ Arousal. However can effect quality both positively and negatively
Why is it important to mange Time Pressure?
An inappropriate Deadline can under effect production (too long) or can over effect production (too short) which can result in ‘Corner Cutting’/ deviating. Line mangers are required to protect engineers from organisational time pressures
What is the Arousal/ Stress Curve?
Refers to a persons readiness to work and is dependent from person to person.
What is Overload?
The part of Arousal when to much stress negatively effects performance. Can lead to errors or corner cutting/ deviation. Can be managed by using appropriate deadlines, delegating work or prioritising tasks
What is Underload?
The lack of productivity.
The part of Arousal when low levels of workload (low levels of stress) leads to under productivity. Can be managed by using appropriate deadlines, reducing staff and better scheduling.
What is Cumulative Sleep Deficit?
The calculation that sleeping under the recommended 8 hours would need to be corrected I.e. sleeping for over the recommended 8 hours to redress the sleep deficit
What is the Rule of Thumb for sleep and work?
One hour of High-Quality sleep is enough for two hours of activity
What is the Circadian Rhythm?
Is the physiological, behavioural functions and processes in the body over one cycle, approximately 25 hours and controlled in the ‘Hypothalamus’
What happens with the Circadian Rhythm from 00:00 (Midnight)?
02:00 Deepest Sleep
04:30 Lowest Body Temperature (Difficult for a person to stay awake)
What happens with the Circadian Rhythm from 06:00?
06:45 Sharpest Blood Pressure Rise
07:30 Melatonin Secretion Stops (Melatonin influences sleep)
10:00 Highest Alertness
What happens with the Circadian Rhythm from 12:00 (Noon)?
14:30 Best coordination
15:30 Fastest reaction time
17:00 Best Muscle Strength and Cardiovascular Efficiency
What happens with the Circadian Rhythm from 18:00?
18:30 Highest blood pessure
19:00 Highest body temperature
21:00 Melatonin secretion starts
*Cycle ends
What is Physiological Fatigue?
Described as the body’s need for replenishment and restoration. (Rest and sleep)
What is Subjective Fatigue?
A persons perception of how sleepy they feel. Usually caused by de-synchronisation of the Circadian Rhythm or high levels of stress. Either working long hours, nights or under stressful circumstances will impact this
