22
Q

What is the basic operation of the CMDS?

A

MWS/RWR sends dispense commands to programmer

23
Q

Will jettison function work on CMDS if power removed?

If in STBY mode?

A

Yes EXCEPT when safety pins are inserted into the safety switches or aircraft is on the ground

Lock out squib power and inhibit dispensing

Will override STBY mode

24
Q

Describe STBY mode for CMDS

A

Power provided for system to perform BIT

Allows user to reprogram the operation flight program (OFP) and MDF

Electrical power not available to any cartridge squib except to provide for payload inventory polling

25
Q

What is MAN mode of CMDS?

A

Allows to manually dispense expendable stores

26
Q

What is SEMI mode for CMDS?

A

If RWR detects threat then CMDS READY will display on HUD and PFD. Can only expend via pilot control wheel dispense switch

If MWS detects threat then CMDS will automatically dispense flares. Can also manually dispense from copilot control wheel and remote switches.

27
Q

What is AUTO mode for CMDS?

A

Automatically dispenses if either MWS or RWR detects threat

Manual dispensing may also be initiated

28
Q

What is BYP mode for CMDS?

A

Flare or chaff may be dispensed upon actuation of CMDS dispense switch

Normally selected after PROGRAMMER FAIL ACAWS

Provides dispense signals directly to sequencers. Ensure dispensing in event of major failure that disables programmer

MWS will auto dispense if detects a threat

This mode considered mission critical

29
Q

How long does jettison of all flares take?

Will inventory reflect correct payload during jettison?

A

3 seconds

Will not reflect correct payload until event is complete

30
Q

Describe MASTER switch on defensive system panel

A

STBY - all components of the defensive system are inhibited from radiating or ejecting. This allows all systems to be safetied by a single switch

31
Q

Can you still CMDS jettison if MASTER switch is in STBY?

A

Yes

32
Q

How many remote dispense switches are there?

Where are they located?

A

3

One at ACS and one at each paratroop door

33
Q

When are the pylon chaff dispensers inhibited from dispensing?

A

If flaps are greater than 15 percent

34
Q

How long does CMDS warm up take?

A

5 seconds

35
Q

Describe the RWR SRCH switch-light

A

ON - will display any search/acquisition radar. an S will display in center of the HDD. S will flash if suppressed search mode is active and SUPP SRCH will flash for 5 seconds

OFF - will not display search/acquisition radars and NORM/SUPP will not be available on the CNI-MU

36
Q

What will display if RWR SRCH is OFF and a search Radar is detected?

A

Message alert SRCH RADAR is displayed on HDD message window for 5 seconds

37
Q

Describe the RWR MODE switch-light

A

PRI - RWR will display only the 5 highest priority threats

OFF - RWR will display the 12 highest priority threats

38
Q

What are the 3 RWR handoff states?

A

Off
Float
Latched

39
Q

How do you active FLOAT mode on the RWR Handoff switch light?

A

If handoff mode is OFF the MC commands it into float mode when the defensive systems control panel handoff switchlight is pressed and held for longer than 0.6 seconds

Will return to off if handoff switch light is pressed for longer than 0.6 seconds while in float mode

40
Q

What does FLOAT mode do in the RWR Handoff switch light?

A

Displays a diamond enhancement (yellow or magenta) around the highest priority threat symbol

As long as it’s in FLOAT mode the diamond will always be associated with the highest threat. If threat ages out then it will move to the remaining threat symbol with the highest priority

41
Q

How do you activate the LATCHED mode of the RWR Handoff switch light?

A

If mode was OFF or already in Float mode, press switch for less than 0.6 seconds

Will turn off if pressed for more than 0.6 seconds

42
Q

Define LATCHED mode of RWR handoff switch light

A

Cyan diamond enchantment to the highest priority threat

If there is no threat then RWR will automatically transition to Float mode

43
Q

Describe the RWR ALT switch light

A

Toggles between low and high priority threat libraries

HIGH- high is displayed on the face of the switch

LOW- light is extinguished and an L is displayed on the inner circle of the RWR overlay

44
Q

Describe the RWR TGT SEP switch light

A

Separates RWR symbols along their respective line of bearing

Allows aircrew to identify individual RWR symbols if multiple threats appear on the same bearing and priority

Function will continue until switch is pressed again, at which time the targets will return to their original locations

45
Q

What does an R, D, or B enclosed in a circle displayed on the HDD mean?

A

Laser threats

R - Rangefinder
D - Designator
B- Beamrider

Symbol of the highest threat will alternate (mipple) with an *

46
Q

How many laser threats can be displayed?

A

8

47
Q

RWR has priority over TCAS. This prioritization leads to a delay of TCAS updates of how long?

How do we mitigate this issue?

A

Over 8 seconds

Display each overlay individually on separate NAV radar formats

48
Q

How long does RWR BIT take?

If failures are detected, how long could BIT time last before ACAWS message is displayed?

A

3-5 minutes

Up to 9 minutes

49
Q

When does the IRCM defensive systems panel switch work?

Describe it

A

Only works if power has been applied via the CNI-MU

STBY - low level power is provided to the IR lamps but lamps are inhibited from radiating

OPR - IR lamps radiate continuously

50
Q

How long does IRCM warmup take?

Which bus powers it?

A

12 minutes

Main AC

51
Q

For optimal cooling how long should you leave IRCM in standby for?

A

At least 15 minutes.

As little as 5 seconds may be used to meet mission requirements

52
Q

Which spectrum does the MWS operate?

A

Ultraviolet

Where earths ozone layer absorbs all in-band photons (radiation) from the sun

53
Q

How does the MWS know it’s an IR missile?

A

It evaluates the four photon count streams for temporal patterns that distinguish an attacking IR missile from all other sources of UV radiation

54
Q

What does the MWS detect, specifically?

A

The exhaust plume radiation emissions that emanate from a missile fired at the aircraft and discriminates against false targets and those missiles not aimed at the aircraft

55
Q

What does the MWS optimal sensor do?

A

Collects UV radiation and filters out photons of the wrong wavelength

56
Q

How many MWS can be displayed at a time?

A

Only 1

57
Q

What are the threat priorities?

A
  1. Beam Riders
  2. Missile threats
  3. Laser Designators
  4. Range Finders
