Lymphatic System Flashcards

1
Q

Lymphatic system function?

A

Lymphatic system function?

.To return excess tissue fluid that has leaked out of the capillaries to the circulating blood.

.Remove bacteria and foreign particles from the lymph in the lymph nodes.

Q

What is Lymph?

A

What is Lymph?

.Lymph is the excess fluid from tissues and has leukocytes and lymphocytes in it. It is similar to blood plasma.

.It is inside the lymphatic capillaries and vessels and is filtered by the lymph nodes then collected by the lymphatic ducts before entering the left subclavian veins and returning to the blood stream in the veins.

Q

Lymphatic capillaries?

A

Lymphatic capillaries?

.The vessels which work with blood to collect excess tissue fluid. They eventually unite to form lymphatic vessels.

Q

Lymphatic vessels?

A

Lymphatic vessels?

.The vessels which transport lymph around the lymphatic system. They have valves (semi lunar) to prevent back flow.

Q

Lymph nodes?

A

Lymph nodes?

.Made of lymphatic tissue

.They filter the lymph by removing harmful microorganisms, tumour cells, damaged or dead tissue cells and toxic substances and prevent septicaemia.

.They produce lymphocytes and antibodies and add them to the lymph to fight infection.

.Lymph leaves the node at the hilus.

Q

Lymphocytes?

A

Lymphocytes?

.B lymphocytes - produces antibodies which combine with an antigen (foreign body) and neutralises it.

.T lymphocytes - helps in the destruction of foreign cells or own cells affected by a pathogen.

Q

Antigen?

A

Antigen?

.A foreign substance which induces an immune response in the body by lymphocytes creating antibodies to destroy it.

17
Q

Antibody?

A

Antibody?

.A blood protein produced in response to foreign substances in the body.

.Antibodies combine chemically with foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses to destroy them.
