Q

What was the procedure (first half) ?

A

Parents of asthmatic children were randomly sampled and written consent was obtained before an interview

Parents completed a questionnaire on the standard inhaler

As a control this questionnaire was completed without any knowledge of the funhaler. The questionnaire was made up of closed questions such as did you medicate your child yesterday yes/no

Participants were then given a funhaler to use for 2 weeks. They were told the device was to be used under adult supervision

Q

What were the findings ?

A

Usage increased with the funhaler. 59% of children who used the standard one used it the day before however with the funhaler 81% used it the day before

Technique improved . 50% of children would take the recommended 4 breaths but with the funhaler it was 80%

Parents were more successful. Only 10% indicated that they were successful at medicating their child with the standard one which rose to 73% with the funhaler
