What was the sample ?
“Little hans”

What was the Procedure ?
Hans showed interest in his widdler at age 3
Hans father gathered data about hans’s dreams/fears/phobias and fantasy through observations and conversations
He would send this info to freud
What was the bath fantasy ?
At 3 and 1/2 his sister was born at this time hans appeared to be afraid of drowning when taking a bath
Freud asked hans “ when you were watching mummy give hanna a bath, prehaps you wished she would let go so hanna would fall in?” (Leading question)
Hans replied “yes” from this freuds concludes that hans has a death wish against his sister. Hans wishes both his sister and his father dead because they interfere with his being alone time woth his mum
What was the Castration anxiety ?
His mum caughter him playing with his widdler. She said if he kept playing with it the doctor would cut it off
Hans was experiencing the oedipis complex
What was hans phobia of horses ?
Around 4 and 1/2 hans became scared of white horses and that they would bite him
Freud interpreted this as a fear of his dad with a dark moustache, his dad once told him to be careful to not be bitten by a horse
All of his unconscious anxietys were repressed and surfaced as a fear of horses
What was the giraffe dream ?
Dreamt about a big giraffe “calling out” because hans had taken the crumpled giraffe away from it. Hans sat on the crumpled one
Frueds interpretation- symonlises what happens in the parental bed in the morning - hans comes in to see his mum and dad
What was the Criminal fantasy ?
Hans fantasised about doing forbidden things with his father .
He was with his dad in a train, and we smashed a window and the police took us off with him
This represented wishing to do something forbidden with his mother which his father was doing
What was the plumber fantasy ?
Hans fantasised a plumber mad his bottom and widler a bigger one each time
Hand could identify with his father by having a larger bottom and widler like him
What was the parenting and marrying fantasy ?
Hans fantasised about marrying his mum and playing father to his own children that his dad would be the grandad
Freud interpretation - hans made space for his father in his life but was made to be grandfather. That way hans can be the father =this is him identifying with his family
What was the aim ?
The aim of the study was to report the findings of the treatment of a five year old boy for phobia of horses
What was the research methods ?
Case study - a study on one person or a small group
Its a longitude cSe as it was conducted over a long period of time
What were the conclusions ?
This supports freuds theory of psychosexual development
Boys pass through the oedipus complex
Behaviour is deterministic
Phobias are the conscious expression of repressed anxietys
