What is the definition of child abuse?
A recent act or failure to act that results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, or imminent risk of serious harm
What is the most common form of child abuse AND the most common cause of death in abused children?
Neglect
can be physical, emotional, educational, or medical
What is the physician’s role when suspecting neglect?
Full medical history
Psychosocial history
Complete physical exam

Although it can be difficult to detect, emotional abuse when isolated can be approached how?
If emotional abuse appears recurrent or child is in imminent harm, what should be done?

bites, bruises, burns, abdominal trauma
Posterior rib fractures
Scapular fracture
Spinous process fracture
Sternal fracture
Metaphyseal lesions
What is the definition of sexual abuse?
employment, use, persuasion, inducement, enticement, or coercion of any child to engage or assist any other person in sexually explicit content
What is the age of most children who are sexually abused?

9-12 years old

What are the signs/symptoms of sexual abuse during a physical exam?
No single behavior, sign or symptom is diagnostic

Deaf Children-50% are victims in childhood or adulthood
Developmentally disabled adults-83% are female
Transgender-50% in childhood or adulthood
Failure to report abuse is considered what sort of crime in Missouri and Kansas?
Class A misdemeanor in MO
Class B misdemeanor, even when another mandated report has made a report. All mandated reporters must report in KS

Which elderly population is at risk for elder abuse?
