Chapter 16 Nutrition Flashcards

1
Q

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)

A

Th e amount of energy expended while at rest; represents the minimal amount of energy required to sustain vital bodily functions such as blood circulation, respiration, and temperature regulation. RMR typically accounts for 70% of TEE

Q

Thermic Effect Of Food (TEF)

A

Th e amount of energy expended above RMR as a result of the processing of food (digestion) for storage and use. TEF typically accounts for approximately 6–10% of TEE.

Q

Energy Expended During Physical Activity

A

Th e amount of energy expended above RMR and TEF associated with physical activity. Physical activity accounts for approximately 20% of TEE.

Q

Estimated total energy expenditure (TEE)

A

Also referred to as total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), is defined as the amount of energy (calories) spent, on average, in a typical day. TEE is actually the sum total of three different energy components: Resting Metabolic Rate, Thermic Effect Of Food, and Energy Expended During Physical Activity.

Q

TEE Calculation

A

*Step 1. Weight (lbs) X 10 = RMR *Step 2. RMR X activity factor (see Table 17. 3 ) = TEE Example: Heavily active 180-pound man ■ Step 1. 180 (lb) X 10 = 1,800 RMR ■ Step 2. 1,800 (RMR) X 2.1 (activity factor) = 3,780 calories expended per day (TEE)
