What does Latino mean?
It is not a race but relates to a culture. Latinos may be any race.

Like most subgroups, there are more differences within the group than between other groups. Some of these differences include:
language customs physical features sports legal status sexual orientation politics
What is Familismo?
strong identification with family, including extended family and friends. Share money, time, food etc.
What is personalismo?
valuing people and having close relationships with relatives and friends. Sharing of food is important connection point.
What is sympatia?
avoiding conflict and striving for harmonious relationships. This is important to keep in mind when treating individuals as it can go against cultural customs to challenge others and engage in conflict.
What is machismo?
The idea that men take responsibility for providing and bringing honor to the family.
What is Marianismo?
The belief that feminine virtues include, sexual purity and passivity. There is also power stemming from women’s ability to birth children.
What is Respeto?
Respect of elders and parents or others in positions of authority. Counselors are seen as people in authority.
What are some social differences within the LatinX communitty?
Respect for time, physical touch, communication is fast and it is more relaxed and flexible.
How does addiction show up in this communitty?
It is more socially acceptable to drink and consume a lot as a man (machismo or macho). Women tend to hide addictions as it can be shameful for them to drink depending on their country of origin. Latina females use drugs at younger ages than males.

What challenges arise when working with LatinX clients?
The view on authority. Counselor can be seen as teacher, authority, advice-giver and law. Religious beliefs and viewing God as the cure. Employment a priority over treatment and being exploited.
