A

When the time interval set on the mechanical or electrical time fuze is reached, the fuze functions and the Primary Expelling Charge is ignited. Ignition of the expelling charge generates gas pressure and ignites the delay composition in the Delay Holder. The gas pressure builds up until it is sufficient to cause the shear pins at the base of the projectile to fail. Once the shear pins fail the contents of the projectile are ejected rearwards as a result of the internal gas pressure.

Post Expulsion.
On being expelled from the projectile the Drogue Parachute Assembly deploys, bringing the complete internal assembly into a vertical plane. The four spin retardant fins deploy, slowing down the rotation of the Illuminant Canister and Main Parachute Assembly. After approximately eight seconds the delay composition burns through and ignites the Secondary Expelling Charge. The secondary expelling charge ignites the main illuminant candle and expels the candle along with the main parachute. The burning candle descends beneath the deployed main parachute whilst producing light (equivalent to 1,000,000 candela) in the visible spectrum for a nominal period of 120 seconds.

MO M782 Fuze: Actions on/from firing

A
  • When the round is fired, the post-launch battery is activated and the microcomputer is reset.
  • The microcomputer loads the mission data to one of its’ registers, verifies that the data is valid and begins fuze timeout.
  • Mechanical arming of the fuze requires the release of two (2) independent safety features within the S&A assembly.
  • Setback on launch moves the setback pin rearwards releasing the initial lock on the rotor, partially releasing the rotor.
  • Centrifugal force, generated by the spin of the fuze, moves two (2) spin detents radially outwards, releasing the second lock on the rotor – thereby fully releasing the rotor.
  • The dynamic imbalance of the rotor, delayed by the runaway escapement, causes the rotor to rotate to the armed position aligning the M55 detonator in-line with the explosive train.
