A-1-1-17 Chapter 4 ASI Disposal Cleanup Flashcards
(60 cards)
Why should cleanup and disposal ops start at the same time a proceed simultaneously?
Prevent concentration of large quantities of hazardous muns accumulating in exposed holding areas.
If cleanup and disposal are conducted in a Warzone, what must be implemented around the ASI, routes, and disposal area?
Security; Patrols/Surveillance Ops to guard against infiltrators that could mine or boobytrap areas.
How should environmental considerations be implemented?
Planning of demo site location.
A POC with federal, state, and local authority of environmental laws.
In Foreign situations you may need an embassy POC
Who should you call for assistance with hazardous materials in the US or outside the US?
Chemical Transportation Emergency Center (CHEMTREC) at 1-800-424-9300 or
Outside the US at 202-483-7616
What should be a part of disposal range considerations for ASI cleanup?
Availability of approved disposal sites
Establish Range Command Post for coordination and comms with ASI site command post.
Should there be different staging areas for incoming ordnance?
Yes, they should be stored separately based on type of ordnance.
What other type of ordnance should be specifically separated as-well?
WP munitions and Low order munitions
How deep should the trenches in the staging areas be dug if that is the route chosen?
How wide should they be?
12 inches deep
And wide enough to not crowd ordnance
(Width of bulldozer blade should suffice)
Staging puts are optional to be dug or lined with sandbags…
Which pits have to be dug out?
Demo and Burn operations
If conditions require it, how should surface water drainage be handled?
Portable pumps or Run-off ditches
What bunkers should be constructed and why?
Bunker for storage of explosive demolition material to protect it.
Bunker for safety of range personnel during demo operations.
What should be avoided in staging areas when it comes to munition placement?
Stacking (adds 33% to haz frag)
Who should always be nearby for ASI demo operations? (And any EOD op for that matter)
Fire and Medical
What should you do to keep vehicles from entering blast frag cordon or entering demo operations area accidentally?
Maintain comms with ASI command post.
Have a standby/staging location for ordnance hauling vehicles to wait until you call them down.
What should be cleared of access roads to prevent tire damage?
Debris; after every demo shot.
What system should be used to mark ordnance?
Mark all dud or unsafe-to-move ordnance
Flagging or engineer tape or spray paint
Red for unsafe-to-move
Yellow for HE filled but safe to move
Blue/White/Green can be used for scrap or debris.
Mark boundaries if clearing area as well
What PPE should personnel entering ASI area wear?
Protective clothing
Flak
Helmets (chin strap on)
Glasses/Face shields
Respirators if dust or vapors become irritating.
What cardinal explosive rule should be followed for personnel entering ASI?
Expose Minimum amount of people for the minimal amount of time in the ASI.
If RSP required, all other personnel and equipment should vacate the area and all other operations stop.
When should RSPs be conducted in ASI?
A predetermined time of day should be established unless action is required immediately for safety.
What should each crew conduct during shift change?
Turnover for specific techniques used during their shift on ordnance found.
What should be conducted prior to each shift starting or operation beginning?
Brief work crews addressing topics such as:
Previous days events
Strategy for the work day
Tasks and assignments
Safety precautions
Weather
Equipment
Security issues
What are important to keep clearance personnel fresh and on their toes?
Frequent breaks
Work rest cycles
What techniques can be used to ensure things aren’t missed during clearance operations?
Sweep line procedures
What are the two main sweep line procedures?
Walking sweep line
Passing Sweep Line
