What is meant by a word class?
The roles each word plays in a sentence
What is meant by syntax?
Rules that control where each word can appear in a sentence
What is meant by morphology?
Describes the construction of individual words
What is an adverb of Manner?
States how something is done- “He talks incessantly”
What is an adverb of place?
Where something is happening- “The book is here”
What is an adverb of time?
When something is happening- “The exam is tomorrow”
What is an adverb of duration?
How long something is happening for- “The fields are temporarily out of bounds”
What is an adverb of frequency?
How often something takes place- “Dave visits sometimes”
What is an adverb of degree?
The extent to which something is done- “I agree completely”
What are spatial prepositions?
Where something is e.g. “underneath”
What are time prepositions?
When something is/was e.g. “before”
What are directional prepositions?
Where something is moving e.g. “towards”
What is a minor sentence?
Has meaning, but NOT a subject and verb
combination e.g. Be quiet.
What is a simple sentence?
Have a subject and a verb e.g. The baby cries
What is a compound sentence?
Two independent clauses linked by a coordinating conjunction e.g. I went to Manchester and I went to Liverpool
What is a complex sentence?
Consists of a main clause and a subordinate clause e.g. the workers left the building when they heard
What is a compound-complex sentence?
Comprised of at least two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses e.g. I invited Bruno to the concert, but he can only go if one of us gives him a ride.
What is meant by active voice?
When the sentence follows the SVO structure and order e.g. Students attacked the teacher
What is meant by passive voice?
The object comes first in the sentence, can often be identified by whether you can put ‘by someone’ at the end e.g. The teacher was attacked.
What is meant by a main clause?
Can stand alone and still
make sense e.g. Lucy cried
What is a coordinate clause?
Two or more independent
clauses joined by a
coordinating conjunction e.g. Lucy cried and she called for her mum.
What is a subordinate clause?
Cannot stand alone. They have to be linked with a main clause by a subordinating conjunction e.g. Will you come and see me when you are here tomorrow?
What is a combining clause?
Combine coordinate and subordinate clauses in the same sentence e.g. He went to London and she went to Manchester because of a big row
What are noun phrases?
Noun phrases are phrases where the head word is a noun. The simplest noun phrase is a single noun.
