A3-Theories- theory of planned behaviour Flashcards
(10 cards)
What does this theory state=
behaviour can be predicted by intention- intentions to change behaviour are linked with actual changes in behaviour
Who created this model=
Ajzen (1991)
Personal attitudes=
these refer to an individual’s favourable and unfavourable beliefs about their behaviour.
Your overall attitude is formed by a balance of positive and negative judgements.
link to alcoholism=
favourable= I drink because i enjoy being drunk
Unfavourable= binge drinking makes me anxious and alcoholism is expensive
if you start having more unfavourable beliefs about a behaviour your more likely to have the intention to change it and vice versa
subjective norms=
an individual’s perception of social pressures and expectations regarding a specific behaviour
Subjective norm is a person’s perception of the social expectations to adopt a particular behavior.
link to alcholism=
An alcoholic might conclude “my family and friends are unhappy with me drinking” this might make them less likely to intend to drink (an ultimately less likely to drink)
perceived behavioural control=
how much control we believe we have over behavior
PBC indirectly influences our intentions to behave- if they believe they have more control over their drinking behaviour, the stronger their intention to stop drinking
PBC can also directly influence behaviour- the more they believe they can control a change, the more likely they want to change.
link to alcoholism=
does an alcoholic believe it is easy to stop drinking heavily.
strength=
scientific evidence to support
Hagger et al- found that personal attitudes, subjective norms and PBC all could predict intention to limit drinking- as well as actual units drank (behavioural change)
These outcomes are exactly what the theory predicts.
weakness=
a weakness is that the TPB is a poor tool in predicting long-term change
McEachan et al conducted a meta analysis on TPB and health behaviours
It was found that intention was a good predictor in behaviour change, but did not maintain the lifestyle change
Thus, TPB is a poor predictor of long term change.
