A3- transtheoretical model- Theories Flashcards
(8 cards)
what are the 5 stages of the Transtheoretical model
precontemplation
contemplation
preparation
action
maintenance
precontemplation=
someone has been unsuccessful in previous
health changes, is unmotivated and unready
They experience negative consequences for poor health decisions
e.g. Susan has a poor and unbalanced diet, doesn’t exercise and is significantly overweight
contemplation=
someone has started to think about positive
health changes they could make.
This is typically 6 months in advance of the change happening
e.g. Susan is unsatisfied and
plans to make a change to her lifestyle
preperation=
someone makes their intention to change their
behaviour in a set time period and decides what they could do to take action
e.g. Susan has now joined a gym
action=
specific changes and observable
progress is being made here
e.g. Susan attends gym classes twice a week
maintanence=
this is to prevent relapse, and
changes becomes more defined
e.g. Susan enjoys talking with
her gym class and colleagues about the changes she has put in place
strength=
the TTM can identify at-risk populations
People not ready for change may be in the precontemplation stage of their health-related lifestyle choices
The TTM shows how we could help these people, and work on raising the pros and reducing the cons of a positive health change
weakness=
the TTM is that by adding so many
modifying factors, the model becomes a totally different model
Thus the TTM is not necessarily one, single model and attempts to explain to much
