A

descended from female line, mother= margaret beaufort

  • line viewed as illigitimate, as it stemmed from John of Gaunt’s 3rd wife (kids out of wedlock)
  • only came to power through victory on battlefield (BoB August 1485), w an army from France, declared King by his step-uncle Lord Stanley, who’d ridden in at end to help winning side basically

A

jan 1486 married e of york- waited until other steps towards consolidation completed, to ensure his assumption to throne not brought abt by wife’s own claim to throne

  • but could use propagnada to show the union eg tudor rose
  • communicated to the public that he was in charge & he’d united the two houses- prevents uprisings & war- marks end of war
