why did h7 have ca cweak claim to the throne?
descended from female line, mother= margaret beaufort
- line viewed as illigitimate, as it stemmed from John of Gaunt’s 3rd wife (kids out of wedlock)
- only came to power through victory on battlefield (BoB August 1485), w an army from France, declared King by his step-uncle Lord Stanley, who’d ridden in at end to help winning side basically
what did the pop originally think of h7?
- had lived abroad since he was 14, living through war & exile- mistrusted
- was welcomed warmly once arrived in London after BoB, but may be just bc they all hated R3
what did h7 need to do?
- build up a relationship of trust w advisors around him
- show he is strong, wise, confident, and assertive
- has alr showed he can fight in battle

- had fled to France after many Ls had been killed in a 1471 battle- ability to think like a fugitive/ life experience
- would not rule by his feelings, put country first
- but he hadn’t been bought up to rule

- could ensure that anyone who fought on Yorkist side would be designated a traitor
- could eliminate enemies who may usurp him
- protecting power/ reign!

eg by confering 11 knighthoods
- displayed that support would be rewarded- may convince some to change- introduced patronage & buying loyalty
- ensured those close to him were even closer

- arranged for supps to detain e of york, daughter of Edward iv, & the earl of warwick, ed vi’s nephew, each of whom could be seen as having a greater claim to throne than him
- this eliminated cmpetition for the throne- prvenets uprising/ usurpation

- appointed key figure to his councill & household eg made sir william stanley chamberlain of the household
- this allowed these ppl political influence & enabled them to develop estates
- ensured he had trusted ppl working for him
- SWS executed for treason 1495- display of power

- before first parliament
- demonstrated his right to throne was based on hereditary right & not only bc parliament had sanctioned it
how did acts of attainder help h7?
parliamentary acts of attainder against Ys who fought at BoB ensured their property was forfeitted to the crpwn- increasing royal income
- enhanced when pa granted him the customs revenues of tonnage 7 poundage for life
- this ensured a wider budget for running the country- more to invest in military/ staff ect
how did marriage help h7?
jan 1486 married e of york- waited until other steps towards consolidation completed, to ensure his assumption to throne not brought abt by wife’s own claim to throne
- but could use propagnada to show the union eg tudor rose
- communicated to the public that he was in charge & he’d united the two houses- prevents uprisings & war- marks end of war

- secured dynasty
- has a clear heir to the throne- secures dynasty’s position & fact his and his family are there to stay
