What is a SOP
Standard operating procedure
What is the purpose of a SOP
A set of instructions that are designed to standardise the approach to a process or action so everyone learns to do it in the same way
Why is it important for everyone to follow sops
To ensure processes can be followed consistently, which can be crucial
If you do not follow sops you may be fired or disciplined
What should all sops include
A risk assessment
What should sops ensure
That a process or procedure is always carried out in the same way
How may organisations keel sops and make them available for staff
Organisations may note their sops on online electronic databases or on a hard copy
They can be held centrally or located in the department which they relate to
What are the reasons it is important to use up to date sops
Methods may have changed or roles/responsibilities may have evolved
What is accuracy
Measurements that are close to true value
What does precise mean
Measurements that are close to each other, but they may be inaccurate
What is calibration
The process of comparing measurements, usually against a reference standard
