What is the police to the courts?
Police provide the courts with evidence
Protect and support vulnerable witnesses
Hold defendants in prison cells and transport them when on remand
What is the police to the CPS?
The police gives evidence to the CPS and are on 24/7 support for any queries
What is the police to the Prisons?
The police are responsible for transporting offenders to and throw from prisons
Also responsible to investigate crimes that occur in prisons
What is the police to the probation service?
The police are responsible to arrest individuals who breach their probation mandates
What is the police to Government Departments?
The police enforce the laws administered by the government
The government pay the police
What is the CPS to the courts?
CPS will prepare the prosecution case in court
They engage in pre-trial matters such as plea-bargaining, assessment of the evidence etc…
The CPS will prepare appeals for unduly lenient sentences
What is the CPS to government departments?
Despite being independent from the government, the CPS still receive funding from them
What is the probation service to the courts?
If an offender is sentenced to a community order in court they are made the responsibility of the Probation service
Probation will write the pre-sentence report, useful to the Court in determining an offender’s future
What is the probation service to the prisons?
When an offender is released on licence, the responsibility for that individual shifts from the Prison Service to Probation Services
What is the probation service to the government departments?
Gov Dept, Ministry of Justice, are responsible for the probation service re: wages, staffing, infrastructure, HR admin etc…
What are the prisons to the courts?
If an individual is given a custodial sentence by the court, they’ll serve that time in prison- prison will take responsibility for them
