How is the Police funded?
£18.4 billion:
2/3 from central government and rest from local council tax
What are the working practices of the Police?
General duties include investigating crime, responding to emergencies, securing crime scenes, working with and, patrolling local communities
What are the aims and objectives of the Police?
Keep peace/Maintain order
Protect life
Prevent, Detect, and Investigate Crime
What is the philosophy of the Police?
The police are the public, and the public are the police. The police are just citizens in uniform, paid to do what citizens must do,
uphold the law
How is the Judiciary funded?
£11 billion of taxes that go towards the Ministry of Justice
What are the working practices of the Judiciary?
Act as a referee in a court case
What are the aims and objectives of the Judiciary?
Ensure a fair trial and to make sure the Jury can come to an informed decision
What is the philosophy of the Judiciary?
To be impartial and to uphold integrity
How is the CPS funded?
£728 million through a mix of central government budgets administered by HM Treasury
What are the working practices of the CPS?
To conduct full code tests on prosecution cases to judge their validity
What are the aims and objectives of the CPS?
To prepare prosecution cases as well as possible for court
What is the philosophy of the CPS?
Independently and fairly assist prosecution cases
How is the National Probation Service funded?
The NPS is part of HM prisons and Probation
Services (HMPPS), whose £1.2 billion budget comes from
the government and general taxation
What are the working practices of the National Probation Service?
Assisting those under probation to meet the mandates of their sentence and to evaluate their release
What are the aims and objectives of the National Probation Service?
To protect the public by rehabilitating offenders, by tackling the causes of their offending and enabling them to turn
their lives around
What is the philosophy of the National Probation Service?
A belief that offenders can change
How are the Prisons funded?
They receive £6.85 billion via the Ministry of Justice
What are the working practices of the Prisons?
122 prisons across England and Wales, all of varying security, that house criminals serving a custodial sentence
What are the aims and objectives of the Prisons?
To protect the public and to try to rehabilitate criminals
What is the philosophy of Prisons?
Preventing victims by changing the lives of offenders
How are the NARCO (pressure groups) funded?
£50 million a year, predominantly off the back of public donations, government grants and contracts
What are the working practices of the NARCO (pressure groups)?
Campaign to change laws
What are the aims and objectives of the NARCO (pressure groups)?
To provide housing, education, employment guidance and outreach projects with young people when working with ex offenders
