they played a variety of different accents to teenagers and asked which was more aestheticly pleasing and which ones werent.
what was found in the matched guise technique?
there were patterns of stereotypical attitudes based towards certain accents
standered RP speekers were seen as more prestigious and intelligent.
rural reigional accents were aestheticly pleasing but were seen as less inteligent.
broad reigional accents associated with urban and industrial areas were seen as unintelligent and unatractive.

words or phrases that are considered colloquial or informal but are used by a specific group of people

different words for the same thing but is used differently in certain areas
e.g dinner - south Tea - north
what are idioms?
a phrase that has a widely known meaning but is different from the dictionary definition
e.g “youve hit the nail on the head”

the idea that there ore 2 social networks- open and closed
she gave people a network strength score based on their knowledge of others in the community and workplace to give a score 1-5.
those who had a high score had closed networks.
men used more non-standard word than women suggesting that men belonged to tighter-knit groups that women.
