when words from a region become less known and less frequently used til time until it dies out.

he investigated the language use of highschool students ages 13-16 from gosforth in newcastle and castle view in sunderland
northeastern dialect had undergone lexical atrittion
older students knew more dialect words than the younger students

we are loosing dialect through younger generations. it is being watered down with every new generation.

the movement toward a more national version of a language rather than regional varients (levelling out)

geographical diffusion: when dialect spreads out from a dominant city centre and town/villages are also affected around the city.

more people are coming from different areas of the country to find work in the city centres and the city is being influenced by the migrant’s dialect as there are lots from different areas.
