Accuracy Of EWT - Misleading Info Flashcards
(6 cards)
Who investigated misleading information
Loftus and Palmer
Loftus and Palmers method
-PP shown a video of a car accident and were asked questions
-One of the questions was did you see the broen glass
-Another one was, at what speed did you see the cars …
-hit
-contacted
-buumped
-collided
-smashed
Why were different questions asked
-Saying ‘the’ broken glass sugests that there was broken glass
-The different verbs used insinuate different speeds of the cars
-These are both considerd leading questions
Loftus and Palmers findings
The word smashed was judged at the speed being faster and using the smashed glass had twice the amount of people saying yes
Methodological issues
Artificial tasks
Doesn’t resemble the real life effect of other variables like anxiety on the recall of EWT
High demand characteristics
-Participants want to be useful, helpful and attentive
-May respond yes to questions even if there was no difference in recall
